DIY: Color Code Your Keys!

April 22, 2016

Are you tired of the same old look of your keys?  In our house, we have a lot of doors, so that means a lot of keys! So instead of wasting my time trying to look for the right key for each door, why not just color code them instead? So if you're feeling a bit artsy then you should continue reading this.

So here are the things you'll need:

       Keys :)

Tape, you'll be needing this to limit where the paint will go to have a cleaner look of your work.

Nail Polish. I just took some from my sister's vanity table. Some of these are scented nail enamel by Revlon. I opted using scented because I don't like the smell of metal rust. But you could use the normal nail polishes if you don't have the scented ones.

Lastly, a plastic container with water. Because this is where all the magic will happen. :)

Let's Do it!

First, put a tape on the neck of the key just below the head. Because if you would put paint on the body, the key might not fit the keyhole anymore, so be careful.

Second, pour the choice of paint that you like. You could go crazy with all the colors and express yourself with it. I poured the paint in a zig-zag motion because I want the abstract look, pour the paint one by one(each color), not all at once. *Remember that this could get messy so better use a cartolina or any mat that you could throw afterwards*

After all the dirty pouring, just dip the key in to the water and scoop the paint.

If you want a more solid look like the picture above, you could skip the water and use the brush of the nail polish instead.

And lastly, dry them up. You could dry it under the sun for a faster drying time.

You could use a mattifying polish to achieve that flat look or just a normal top coat to protect the paint from fading.

(Left-Right)
For the 1st key, I dabbed the paint with my fingers to get that textured look and feel. For the next key, I used two shades of red to have that bloody look, haha! and the last key is just the normal abstract look.

You could think of any designs or whatever that pops out of your head. It's limitless! So go hard color coding your keys! It's fine to make mistakes, express yourself!
